Before you enroll: get these five answers in writing
- Total training cost: Include tuition, books, exam, health screening, uniforms, and externship fees.
- Clinical placement: Who finds the site, how many hours are included, and what happens if no placement is available?
- Certification eligibility: Which exam does the course prepare you for, and what additional requirements remain?
- Student outcomes: Ask for the cohort year, number of students, and definitions behind completion, exam-pass, and placement figures.
- Schedule and refunds: Confirm class and clinical shifts, attendance rules, withdrawal deadlines, and refund terms.
How we scored programs
We weighted cost (20%), certification preparation (20%), hands-on training (20%), career support (15%), outcomes and reputation evidence (10%), length and flexibility (10%), and transparency (5%). Scores are editorial and provisional. A missing published figure affects confidence; it does not establish that a school performs poorly. We did not equate college accreditation with program accreditation or exam preparation with certification.
HSPA requires 400 verified SPD hours and an exam for full CRCST. It does not arrange those hours. CBSPD describes separate CSPDT eligibility routes. Ask schools which exam they prepare students for and whether clinical hours are assigned, optional, or your responsibility.
What about the “worst” sterile processing schools?
We could not substantiate a fair national worst-10 list from comparable audited outcomes, current full prices, and regulatory records. Naming ten schools as poor performers would overstate the evidence. The following are documented value tradeoffs, not findings of misconduct or low quality:
- Kingsborough is inexpensive for coursework, but says students must secure 400 hands-on hours and optional externship costs extra.
- Anne Arundel lists a county-resident base price that excludes exam, books, clothing, and optional externship.
- Santa Fe publishes a much higher $14,534.07 estimated nonresident total, while also publishing detailed costs and outcomes. It may still be a good fit for some students.
- Texas Woman’s offers flexibility but its $4,000–$4,500 tuition requires a careful comparison with lower-cost clinical programs; verify externship availability before enrolling.

Affordable, online, and clinical training options
Affordable: Nebraska Methodist ($795 course), Kingsborough ($985 base), ICC ($1,670 estimate plus extras), Jefferson State ($1,795 course), McHenry ($1,999 with exam). Compare all required costs and clinical access, not sticker prices alone.
Online or hybrid: Texas Woman’s (online/hybrid), Virginia Western (online access), Houston City College (hybrid), Santa Fe (mixed format). Confirm in-person clinical requirements.
Clinical experience: Aims (400-hour internship), ICC (about 400–500 hours), Santa Fe (hospital internships), Tri-C (hospital practicum), Jefferson State (103 assigned hours). Hours and placement commitments differ.
Career changers: Nebraska Methodist (8 weeks), Oakland (employer partners but next cohort 2027), Houston City College (hybrid), Kingsborough (short course with self-arranged clinical).
Most expensive among this set: Santa Fe nonresident ($14,534.07 estimated all-in), Aims nonresident ($11,848 tuition before fees), Santa Fe resident ($6,250.17 estimated all-in), Texas Woman’s hybrid ($4,500). Different cost definitions limit direct comparison.
Certification preparation: McHenry (CRCST exam fee included), Lincoln Land (CRCST and CSPDT prep), Oakland (CBSPD), Tri-C (CBSPD), Aims (confirm named exam). Exam preparation is not certification.

Sterile processing school FAQs
What is the cheapest sterile processing certification program?
Among the programs checked here, Nebraska Methodist lists a $795 course cost and Kingsborough lists $985 in tuition and required class fees. Neither price alone proves a low total cost to full CRCST; ask about the exam and 400 clinical hours.
Are sterile processing programs accredited?
Institutional accreditation, program approval, and accreditation of a certification exam are different things. Ask each school which credential it means and verify it with the accreditor. HSPA says its CRCST certification is accredited by ANAB and NCCA; that does not accredit every training course.
Can I become CRCST certified online?
Online theory can prepare you for the exam, but HSPA requires 400 verified hours of actual SPD work for full CRCST. Ask how an online program helps secure those hours.
How much does sterile processing training cost?
In this sample, advertised course prices begin below $1,000, while some nonresident two-semester programs exceed $10,000. Add books, lab fees, health checks, exam fees, travel, and any externship charges.
How do I find sterile processing programs near me?
Start with local community and technical colleges and nearby hospital workforce programs. Compare their written all-in quotes and clinical placement agreements with local job requirements on SterileJobs.com.
Research sources and verification
Primary pages linked in every scorecard row were reviewed 27 October 2026. Certification rules: HSPA CRCST and CBSPD CSPDT, reviewed the same date. Figures and program descriptions are school-published claims, not independently audited results. Santa Fe reports its 2025 cohort had 22 graduates out of 24 admitted and 20 exam passes among 22 test takers; these are institutional reports, not independently audited outcomes.
Research appendix: programs needing more data
For the next editorial update, request full fee schedules, clinical placement agreements, current cohort availability, program-specific completion/exam/placement outcomes, and the named certification exam from every school lacking them. Community College of Denver, Lincoln Land, Tri-C, and Houston City College lack a clearly published all-in program price on their landing pages. Nebraska Methodist’s published $795 course cost conflicts with the page’s $250 deposit plus $530 balance; obtain a current invoice. McHenry’s page should clarify who secures its post-exam preceptor. We also screened UT Arlington’s extension course, but excluded it pending direct verification of its current clinical and fee terms. No negative ranking is assigned to any unranked program.
