Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Washington, DC

Role Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician plays a critical role in supporting safe patient care by performing instrument reprocessing, sterilization, and distribution activities for Perioperative Services. This position ensures surgical instruments and equipment are decontaminated, assembled, sterilized, inspected, and distributed in strict compliance with hospital policy and regulatory standards including AAMI, AORN, SGNA, OSHA, and The Joint Commission.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform decontamination, assembly, sterilization, case cart preparation, and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Operate and maintain steam autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, washer disinfectors, and related sterile processing equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs).
  • Inspect instrument trays and sets for completeness, accuracy, and functionality.
  • Process rigid and flexible scopes and power equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintain accurate documentation required for quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
  • Receive, track, and return loaner instrumentation in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Restock peel packs and maintain inventory levels to support procedural readiness.
  • Conduct daily biological monitoring and equipment verification testing.
  • Report safety concerns, equipment issues, and incidents to leadership promptly.
  • Support a collaborative, high-reliability team environment focused on patient safety.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of sterilization procedures, surgical instrumentation, aseptic technique, and instrument care.
  • Working knowledge of medical and surgical terminology.
  • Ability to operate decontamination and sterilization equipment safely and effectively.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Certification: Sterile Processing Technician certification required. Candidates must obtain certification within one (1) year of hire if not certified at the time of employment.
