DescriptionThe Surgical Processing Technician performs and participates in decontamination, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage and dispatch of surgical instrumentation. The Technician serves as a resource for team members.
Responsibilities
- Performs the decontamination and sterilization processes for instruments
- Operates equipment including washers/disinfectors, ultrasonics, steam sterilizers, vaporized hydrogen peroxide gas plasma and high level disinfection
- Receiving, handling, collection and transport of contaminated instruments
- Cleaning, decontamination and disinfection of instruments
- Assists in training non-certified or new team members on proper sterilization techniques
- Serves as a resource for team members
- Performs instrument tray inspection, assembly and packaging for sterilization
- Adheres to manufacturers' instructions, department policies and procedures pertaining to preparation and packaging of instrument sets and individual instruments
- Inspects all instruments for cleanliness and function
- Assembles surgical trays and vendor trays in rigid containers or wraps for sterilization
- Assures timely instrument turnaround for the OR case picking process
- Performs process monitoring, testing and quality control
- Adheres to manufacturers' instructions, department policies and procedures while performing monitoring and recording of the sterilization process
- Physical monitors such as time, temperature and pressure is monitored with every sterilization load
- Biological monitoring is performed with every sterilization load as specified in department policies and procedures
- Chemical monitoring is performed as specified in department policies and procedures
- Process challenge device (PCD) is used to assess the effective performance of the sterilization process

Preferred Qualifications, if Certified Sterile Processing Technician
Education: N/A
Licensure: Certification from the International Association of Hospital Central Service Management (I.A.H.C.S.M.) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
Experience: Previous experience in a Sterile Processing Department.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Familiarization with surgical instrumentation.
