Sterile Processing Technician

Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies in accordance with established infection control standards and departmental procedures. This role supports safe, high-quality patient care by ensuring all supplies and instrumentation are prepared accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.

Essential Responsibilities

Decontaminate, clean, assemble, sterilize, store, and distribute surgical instruments, procedure trays, equipment, crash carts, and supplies using prescribed procedures and aseptic technique.

Operate sterilization equipment (including steam and gas plasma autoclaves), ensuring proper loading, cycle selection, and documentation in compliance with AORN, Joint Commission, OSHA, and AAMI standards.

Assemble surgical case carts, trays, packs, and kits; maintain supply inventory; assist with OR setup; clean and maintain patient care equipment and crash carts; utilize instrument tracking systems; and support departmental workflow and training.

Education & Experience Requirements

High school diploma or GED required. Certificate of Completion from an accredited Central Sterile Processing program or minimum of one (1) year of sterile processing experience required. Certification through IAHCSMM (HSPA) or CSPBD preferred.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Requires frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 30 lbs, and exposure to communicable diseases, biohazardous materials, chemicals, and sharp instruments.
